The first voting on this blog has shown that my students learn most of their English from television.
Do you agree with the results?
Why do students still need English lessons at school?

Yes and no. Yes, because we spend a lot of our time infront of a TV. We watch films, we listen to the music... However, we stil need to educate in school, where we can learn about grammar, tenses, forms...
I think that we learn almost everything from TV. when we were kids we spend all day in front of the TV watching cartoons. and we always watch English movies sometimes even English football games, etc. there's a lot of English shows on TV. But from TV, we only learn how to speak. And here comes importance of English lessons. We learn some new words from English vocabulary, we have a lot of fun while we are doing exercises in pairs and groups. And it is very significance to learn to write as well. At the beginning I knew a lot of English words and I almost knew how to talk clearly at some points. But only few of us knew how to write down the words... But I'm staying with TV because I still think that we learn essence from it. Thats all that I have to say:P
It's excellent when enjoyment and learning meet.
jimmy when you said when we were little, we spedn all day watching cartoons "SPEAK FOR YOURSEFL!!!!" the fact that you still watch them tells me everything....
I spend a lot of the time infront of a TV. But if we wouldn't have English
lessons i don't know how we could write some words. I learn a lot for songs. sometimes when i hear some song which i like, i search for lyrics and it helps me very much.
i agree most of the time we spend infront of tv,but we need english lessons for writting ,forms.. that our english will be corect =P
gregi who's obsessed with Family Guy and lame things that no one understands??get a live...
I think that we need lessons in school because of the grammar tenses and we learn how to write words correct ... but we get rich words from TV, music, computer, talking with english friends (or some others who can speak english)
I spend almost all my free time in front of TV. However, I know that I in any case need a school lessons, because I’m silly for English =). When I watch a English films I keep some words, but other day I will forget everything.
Welcome, Taja. Excellent that you've made it too! I'm looking forward to your contributions here. Don't worry, I also forget some expressions, etc. But if you practise and use language a lot, words "stay" longer in your memory.
I started learning english from TV programme Cartoon Network. I think it's pretty good learning method.
I was one of students who voted for television and I think it isn’t only about being lazy but in some ways it’s important for our education too. I really like watching serial The hills on MTV. It’s a kind of reality show and there’re no subtitles, so it’s good for learning some new words and I understand almost everything. But of course TV isn’t the only way how to learn language, this is just colloquial English and what about grammar? That’s why English is still important as a school subject. We learn rules there and how to write things..., so I think this blog is good manner to practice writing.
On TV are lots of films, shows, cartoons in English and you can easily learn how to speak in english. And you get the ''ton deaf'' for english.
But what we learn at school is good for our theoretic knowledge. =)
but I still think that is more important how we speak in english than how good we know every rules of english grammar
you must watch out that tv doesn't addict you. it can happen often.
i like english lessons better.
Television playes an important role in a childs life. Especially when they are still very little and they have nothing to do, they just sit in front on the tv. They look at cartoons where they learn a lot of new words. Now comes the bad part. People have no sense of time and they often spend more than enough time in front of the television where they become literaly ADDICTED on everything that is playing. So WATCH EDUCATIONAL SHOWS AND NOT CARTOONS ALL THE TIME (like me :P)
